Fun Fact

The picket fence, as we know it today, actually has an interesting history. The word ‘Picket’ comes from the French ‘Piquet’ which means pointed stick or board. Sharpened wood was used as a perimeter fence that archers would shield behind when defending land.

Much later in the picket fence story a similar design of fence, inspired by the French ‘Piquet’ started being used in ‘the New World’. Colonists installed picket fences around their properties in America. To protect their fence from the weather they mixed water and lime and covered the fence with the mixture. This it was gave the fence its now classic white look.

In the 19th Century mass production of fencing parts became cheaper but at the same time fancier. The picket fence became an overnight hit and spread all over the East Coast of America. Most notably in New England and Key West before spreading across the North American continent and Europe.

After the second world war the white picket fence became synonymous with the American dream. Acquiring a house with a white picket fence was now a status symbol appearing in literature and movie alike making the picket fence what it is today.
